University Of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) has recognised members of its community who were recently promoted with recognition awards.
The University of Lagos recently honoured some teaching and non-teaching staff that made substantial contributions towards achievement of the objectives of the institution.
To commemorate the feat, UMC organised a prayer and reception to celebrate the hard working staff that rendered services in a distinctive way to the institution.
The event with the theme ‘ Recognition of Role models’ also witnessed the presentation of gifts to students who emerged with first class.
In his remark, the Chairman of UMC, Prof. Lai Olurode said, the event is to commend personnel within the institution that distinguish themselves in teaching, research and excellence service delivery.
“We are here to celebrate the likes of Prof. Olayide Abass, the likes of Prof. Rahaman Bello and at the same time celebrate excellence and experience sharing. It is a plus to the community.”
He commended the staff, noting that the recognition was also meant to motivate other staff to improve the quality of their service.
The Chairman of the occasion, former Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos, Prof. Rahaman Bello, said the event was not meant to segregate Muslims from others in the community but to appreciate what Allah has done to each and everyone in the community.
“The Muslim Community in UNILAG is growing and the population of Muslims in the community is increasing as well. Looking at the list of those that are promoted, the community has a large number of Muslims moving upward and as such it is a call for recognition and celebration.”
He added that the event should be a yearly program to celebrate some of the staff in the community that are aspiring to move up and those that are moving up steadily, getting close to top of their career.
“ This should not be a one year affair, it should be a continuous exercise. Whatever you do, you are been watched and it will be acknowledged. This has shown that good quality of service leads to recognition both local and international,” he said.
Bello urged the staff to use their position judiciously and endeavor to be a role model in the institution by delivering their tasks accordingly.
“As Muslim in the community, the way you carry yourselves, do your job, your role of leadership must portray you as role models to others. Weather you a broadcaster, doctor, engineer or academician, what is important is how you are seen as Muslim in the community.”
The Registrar UNILAG, Barrister Azeez Oladejo, while delivering good wishes from the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, congratulated the community on the historic occasion.
“ We are here to listen to our fathers who have seen it all in the university, either as academicians, administrators or both, to let us know how the terrain looks, so that those of us who have decided to take after them will know what to do and not to do to succeed.”
